Horizon's look a ILM and VFX - Part 2

Matte Painting BBC's Horizon looks at ILM and visual effects. This show is from 1985 and is a true gem. I thought it would be important and educational to show the interesting bits of the show, focusing on subjects such as optical printing, matte painting and even rotoscoping.

My top 10 Prints and posters of 2014

Here is the list of prints and posters that I think are top notch for 2014. Some I own and the ones I don't, I want to own. Since a few prints from some private commision groups weren't done yet I couln't not post here. A certain Evil Dead print I had in mind to make the list.

Edit: I just realized I own all these prints. I have a problem

Ken Taylor's Alice in Wonderland print was part of the Mondo Nothing's Impossible Gallery event. There were some good piece in the show but for me this was the best of them all. The color is person are so vibrant and work very well together. AiW is one of my all time favorite disney movies so this print was a must have for my collection.

One of the first solo shows for Mondo of 2014 was Laurent Durieux. His solo show was announced at the Mondo Mystery Movie which I was lucky enough to be at. You could tell people weren't to excited about the poster Durieux did for MMMXI. After his solo show a few months later his work started commanding higher prices. His Forbidden Planet poster isn't his most commercially successful from his solo show but by far my favorite.

2014 I started changing my taste in prints. I have been getting into more and more art prints as appose to Movie prints. Eelus's Summoning on the right was a big reason. I was lucky enough to be in the amazing commission group that made this print possible. With the success of Summoning Eelus created Conjuring on the right. I had fast hand on the day of the Conjuring drop and scored one. Really excited to own this set. One of my priorities is to frame these two prints.

 Blade Runner!!!

My first Roamcouch was this print Revolution and Rainbow Inc./Brooklyn Bridge. The above is my favorite of the two.

Equity was my first Chuck Sperry big purchase. I grabbed the wood edition of 25 at the Pop Époque – The Art of Chuck Sperry Art Show at Firehouse 8. I had the pleasure of talking to him about this print. He said he wanted to make something that was a little more affordable for everyone. The cost was $300 but compared to some other prints not a bad deal.

Laurent Durieux's Back to the Future series is pretty damn good! I stood in line at Mondo-Con longer then I care to say for the BttF 3 Variant.  Anyone want to trade their Bttf 1&2 Variants for my reg set?

Now local artist to me Ben Eine! First print of his and it is so amazing in person. Printed on hand torn paper with a glossy finish. I may need to frame this in 2015.

Let me know what your top prints of 2014 were.

Mondo-Con!

My favorite horror movie of all time remastered and a new score! Cant wait to see it!

The debut release on Death Waltz Originals is not only a brand new recording from Umberto & Antoni Maiovvi entitled 'The Hook & Pull Gang' but also doubles as a brand new re-score of the notorious classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The duo will exclusively perform the re-score live at MondoCon & Beyond Fest in September .

Spidey is back!

The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Transforming Jamie Foxx into the Villainous Electro-Design FX-WIRED

In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Jamie Foxx stars as Electro, the glowing antagonist to Andrew Garfield's Spidey. In this video, learn how Sony Pictures Imageworks used a combination of makeup and CGI to turn the Academy Award winner into a blue, electrically-charged villain--with inspiration from lightning, neurological networks, and nebulas.

Creating lightening flash with curve tool

For this (Below) shot from Valiant I was asked to add some lightning flashes in the clouds. Thought about it for a second and realized I am not the best animator so i turned to the curve tool.

First thing I did was go to youtube and find reference that I liked. I picked this video.

I brought my footage into nuke from youtube hooked up the curvetool and picked an area I liked.

I added the time offset just to get the footage to frame 1.

Picked the area I liked for the curve tool to calculate

Then I hit go in the CurveTool tab and let it calculate.

Here is the image we will add the curve to.

Added a keyer to my clouds background to create an alpha of the area I wanted to have effected.

I copied and pasted the CurveTool Intensity Data tab into an exposure node in all three channels RGB.

This was my result!

You can also change your keyer to get different results or add an expression to the exposure tool to make it brighter or darker.

Valiant Trailer

Did a few shots for this short.  After DI and sounds looking really nice!

Might do a quick tutorial on how I created the lightening with the curves tool.

Nuke Set Threads

Here is a very quick tip on how to set your threads in Nuke.

Type X and this window comes up:

Type this:

Hit enter and you'll see this:

How ever many cores your system has, double that and that is the max threads you should enter.  I've read that if you have a 12-core system you shouldn't set the max threads to 24. Some people say it actually slows Nuke down.
